There are many ideas that drive our work at Thriving Cities, perhaps none more than the concept of an “unusual coalition.” In an era of vocational specialization, social fragmentation, and community polarization, coming together to work for the good of our cities can certainly seem daunting if not impossible. Yet, if we look hard enough and pay close attention to the various efforts underway in our communities, we will most likely see unusual coalitions at play. For us, an unusual coalition is any project, relationship, or initiative that brings together a diverse set of stakeholders to work collectively on either a daunting challenge or unique opportunity. Below is a recent speech given by our good friend Corey Widmer in Richmond, Virginia. We believe that the vision Corey beautiful articulates is one that every city and community wishing to thrive should aspire to.
